Make-Up Techniques I Want To Be Better At

In life, I think there will always be things we wish we were better at. In some areas, I have accepted that I will never be an expert and that's ok - yes Mum, we both know its Maths. However that doesn't stop there being some things that I want to be better at. Whilst I've been wearing make-up for about 10 years, there are still some techniques that I would love to be better at, and to be honest with the growth of social media, it's only highlighted it more. So in today's post, I am going to talk about those techniques, why I want to be better at them and where I am at the moment.

Make-Up Techniques I Want To Be Better At - Life Of A Beauty Nerd
Highlighting and Contouring
In terms of base make-up, I think getting the perfect highlight and contour can be one the hardest. Out of the two, I do think highlighting the skin is easier, it's more about finding a highlighter that is not too glittery or shimmery. The only trouble I would say I have with highlighting mainly is with illuminators and getting the overall dewy and glowy skin. Some disappear completely under foundation, or again are too shimmery.

Also, I prefer the centre of my face to be matte otherwise it can look oily, but that can mean that highlighter looks a bit out of place.

Contouring is much harder to master and whilst I am definitely better at it, it definitely not my finest skill. The hardest part I find to contour is the forehead and jaw line. Whilst I never go for a heavy contour anyway, even applying bronzer to these areas can be tricky - I personally don't want to emulate Kandy Ho's make-up error from the first episode of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 7.

Smokey Eye
There are so many different tutorials for this and I still don't think I've been able to do it. Whether it starts with eyeliner, or just with eyeshadow, I just cannot seem to get the hang of it. Also because I have slightly hooded eyes and I wear glasses, you would not be able to see all of the technique?

But I would still like to be able to do it.

Perfect Cat Flick With Liquid Eyeliner
Now I wear a cat eyeliner flick every time I wear makeup but I would not say it is perfect ever time. Sometimes it goes too thick, the end goes slightly too long or it just doesn't look like a flick. I find most of these problems occur especially when I am using a liquid eyeliner. Again because I wear glasses, I think I can get away with eyeliner mistakes as for some reason they manage to hide some errors.

Also because I don't wear any amazing eyeshadow looks, it doesn't matter if the eyeliner does go a bit thick. However whenever I see the amazing eyeliner flicks on Instagram, I wish I could do that every time! I think the hardest part for me is getting the perfect end flick, especially with liquid eyeliner.

Ombre Lips
I love looking at lip art on Instagram, the artistry and technique that these people have shown just on their lips is amazing. I also love watching the mini-video tutorials on famous make-up artist Pat McGrath's Instagram where they create ombre lips with some of her lip products - it is mesmerising to watch.

I think an ombre look just looks stunning and I would love to do it, I am not afraid to wear bold lipstick so why not be able to go one step further! I have tried it with liquid lipstick but I have not been able to get a seamless blend or I don't have shades that end up looking great together.

So those are the make-up techniques that I would like to be better at. What make-up techniques would you like to be better at?

  1. You and I have the same makeup goals haha! I don't think I'll ever master contouring - I've tried so many times but it's just so damn hard (and time consuming)!

    1. Great minds think a like haha!!
